In this universe there are many small and big masses. Among them the most massive mass is black hole. Nowadays, many persons are interested on black hole. Are you interested on it? If you're then let's start from its introduction.

What is a black hole?
A black hole is a region of spacetime (It is a scientific interpretation that combines spaces and time as one whole.) from which nothing can escape, not even light. It has an extremely high gravitational field which sucks in everything that gets close to it. Around a black hole, there is a mathematically defined surface called an 'event horizon' that marks the point of no return. It is called 'black', because it absorbs all the light that hits the horizon, reflecting nothing. The term "black hole" was coined in 1967 by American astronomer, John Wheeler.

How do black holes form?
It is believed that the smallest black holes formed when the universe began. Stellar black holes are formed, when the centre of a huge star falls in upon itself, or collapses. When this happens, it is called a supernova. When it explodes, it scatters most part of the star into the void of space, but leaves behind a small core that may became a neutron star. If the remnant core is large enough, it forms into a black hole- the dark star.

Do black holes expand in size?
Scientists believe they do! Once a black hole has formed, it can continue to grow by absorbing mass - gas and interstellar dust- from its surroundings. But absorbing other stars and merging with other black holes, super massive black holes of millions of solar masses may form. There is general consensus that super massive black holes exists in the centres of the most galaxies.

Do black holes have any bad effects on us?
Not so far ! The closest black hole yet discovered are several thousand light-year away- so far that they have had no effect on the Earth's environment even when they are several million times the mass of the sun.

Which is the largest black hole?
The largest confirmed black hole inhabits the core of Messier 87 (M87), a giant elliptical galaxy in the constellation, Virgo. The M87 black hole appears to be about 6.6 billion times the mass of the Sun, with a diameter of about 25 billion miles (40 billion km).

Which black hole is the closest to the Earth?
Earth's closest black hole, known to man, is Cygnus X-1. It is located about 6,070 light years away from the Earth.
